Mr Vetterlein has been teaching us about microscopes and telescopes.  He came in and showed Gavin, Andrew and Duncan how to make microscope slides so they could share them with the class.

We had a great time during our outdoor education experience in Rousay.  We did team challenges, had a BBQ and had a sing song and story telling around the campfire.  We camped on the school pitch.  We were joined by secondary pupils from Rousay, Egilsay and Wyre on Saturday and we did coasteering and canoing and had a paddle at the beach.

We planted our Jubilee trees in the community garden.  Duncan's mum very kindly helped us.
Erin thought planting trees was fun and very relaxing!

With Mr Giles in drama we have been exploring situations and feeling people may face when going to a new school.  We are now planning our own video guides to help people going to a new school.

P4-7 Rousay Orchestra

Thursday 3 May 2012

We love learning new ways to keep fit and healthy.  Mr Swanney came out to Rousay to teach us how to play Golf.  He has very kindly left us the equipment to practise with.

We are testing the soil in the community garden to check it has the Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium level that will give us the best crop of vegetables.  This is our pH test.  We found out that the pH is around 7.5 which is Alkaline and ok for growing vegetables.

As if having their own publishing company wasn't enough P4-7 are now starting their own production company!  We are learning about what makes a story newsworthy, how to gather news from reliable sources and what different audiences want to know and see.  In groups we plan to go on to seeking out our own news stories and produce our own news programme.

In Maths P5/6 have been learning about finding places using grid references.  They have also been learning about scale, drawing a map of their own using an appropriate scale.

P7 are learning about navigation in Maths.  They are learning to plan a journey using distance, compass directions and using a protractor to measure angles.

Erin has been learning to play the guitar.  She shared her new skill with the class.  Well done Erin!

Work has begun in the Community Garden.  We have prepared the soil by weeding and digging and have planted carrots, beetroot, parsnips, radish, lettuce, onions and turnips.  We are starting out cabbages in small pots before planting out and we plant to have a weird and wonderful veg section too, with colourful carrots!  We will also be planting seed tatties.  We plan to sell our veg as part of a small enterprise project.
